The lesson I learnt was that if you want to gamble (I don't) then go to casino.

I've had 5 contracts with IB's so far. In Front/Middle Office upgrades and new web projects I had to sit with traders who seemed to be getting younger and more arrogant as the years went by. Nevertheless, most were pretty good at their jobs and as good as gold in the pubs and bars outside work. One thing that I've learnt from them is that no matter how much you know or learnt through college or experience, it won't help you when dealing with the ups or downs of the markets, otherwise, if you can't make decisions in an instant, you won't get the deals. A lot is based on hunches not logic and there is a definite herd mentality which explains a lot. Hence buying and selling is not for the faint hearted or self-opinionated, so eg AtW will never make any money out of it.

Did some technical risk stuff last year. Learnt a lot from the people in the various business units.
Of course, now I'm broke after taking their advice...
