I lived in the US for 5 years and one of my projects meant that I lived in the Bay area for 6 months.....!!

I agree with most of what has been written but a couple of extra comments:

    * Dont forget to head north to the Napa valley and do the vineyards. If you can get someone else to drive - do. The tours are free and sampling is a must. You can do several in one day! *hic*

    * Go over to East bay. There are some nice places there. In Danville is the restaurant where the filmed Mrs Doubtfire scenes, a great irish bar (name escapes me for a minute) and some nice areas.

    * You can rent harleys from several places in town (one under the city end of Oakland bridge) if you have a bike licence. Great way to tour round the suburbs!

    * A drive out to Half Moon bay is recommended. Great beaches and not too far from town.

Do they still dangle hankies out of their back pockets to indicate their ‘preferences’?
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

I never. I had breakfast at some irish bar off union square.

As for lunch and dinner, if you can, eat at the counter. You get to meet the locals then (which isn't as bad as it sounds!)...
        Older and ...well, just older!!

If you fancy a day away from SF hire a convertable and drive out to Santa Cruz and then down the coast to Big Sur on Highway 1. Some of the most spectacular coastal roads in the world, stunning scenery and loads of places to get out and see the country side.

And, for the nerdily inclined, the computer history museum about half an hour south of SFO airport

Not my bag. I do like to snort the odd bit of wasabi after a few pints though

Another thing about Alcatraz - it can get booked up, so if you are only there for a day or two it may be wise to book before you go.
