Ken Clarke does an about-turn on the euro

Former Tory chancellor Kenneth Clarke says he does not think Britain could join the euro with "complete security and confidence" for 10 years.

It wouldn't have anything to do with his Tory leadership bid, would it?

"Mr Clarke has been backed to be leader by ex-deputy prime minister Lord Heseltine." That should scupper him!

Well, he is right you know -- Brown is not keen supporter of Euro, so if you add 3 years Tony + 4 years Brown, then few years of fixing the mess, and you will get 10 years.

never understood why people are so anti-euro in this country. Wouldn't it be great to be able to visit any european country with the same money we've got at home? I have friends in Holland and they love it! OK, prices got hiked big time during the changeover in 2002 or whenever it was but once that hit got through, things went well for them.

I can understand companies being against it as the interest rates etc are now controlled by a central bank away from any government (but hey! same in the UK) but people??? Aren't people fed up being ripped off in the exchange rates by money changers and banks? For people who travel a fair bit, it would save them a lot of money.

I think it's just a name issue. 'EURO'. Doesn't sound great. A bit too european. A bit like a dodgy musical style (europop), or a greasy local ("got chatted up by a euro last night"). If they renamed it "pound" or something, the Brits would queue to sign up

I have friends in Holland and they hate it. You can see why when you go over there : the exchange rate is 1 to 2/3, yet the cost of living is as if 1 to 1, compared with UK.

I've never understood why people here hang on to English.

Wouldn't it be great if we spoke French, German, Italian, Spanish here instead so that when we go abroad we can all talk to each other.
