                The reckon only something like 1 in a million of the species that ever existed are in the fossil record. Being fossilised for millions or billions of years is hard. And most of them were water-based (as opposed to solvent based obviously).

                    Maybe when the they first designed the Chinese calendar, ALL the animals were mythical, but since then they've discovered that all apart from the dragon are real.
