Another reason not to visit Scotland

Whether they have or whether they have not doesnt really matter. The fact is that they have a very strong economy and an identity of their own of which they are very proud. They are entrepreneurial, drunkards or whatever but they dont spend their time banging on about how the English have treated them. The scots identity is associated with being a nation dependent upon welfare or jobs in the public sector. They are inward and backward looking people. At least the Irish when they bombed mainland England made sure that it was their own construction companies (Murphy for instance) that picked up most of the contracts to rebuild it.

The best thing that could happen to Scotland is for them to govern themselves (keep their Oil revenues, but no subsidies from England) and become like Ireland.

If it sounds like that, then it's because it's mostly true.

There's always the pareto effect that you only hear the most vocal of the whiners, but whiners the Scots have become. Everything is someone else's fault, or the fault of things that happened hundreds of years ago. Anyone with any get up and go has got up and gone, and that's been going on for a century or more. This is why I think we have diluted the pool, the ones who are left have a higher proportion of nothings. Scotland is suffering talent anaemia.

Of course there are many Can Do people in Scotland, but because it's piss poor and has no industry to speak of, and Scots are generally more 'alpha' than some other races, in terms of self-improvement, business acumen, education and risk-taking, this means there's always a surplus of clever motivated brave people, many more than there are satisfying jobs to cater for them. Scotland's biggest exports for a hundred hears has been business leaders, engineers, scientists, the do-ers of the world.

I'm not ashamed of that. But it's a two edged sword. If we were really brave, we'd have stayed in Scotland and made it better, made it into the sort of place that keeps its talent. I'm part of that failure, so when I'm angry and disappointed in Scots and Scotland, a fair amount of it is directed at myself. Me, and people like me, have the power to make Scotland what we'd like it to be, but that very pioneering spirit that takes us all over the world seems to fail us when it comes to making Scotland better.
