Oh yes can't stand that odius moron, second only to Chris Moyles on my talentless celeb shhhitlist
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

I always remember watching a 'on the road documentary' with Brand where he was following the footsteps of some Gonzo journalist from the 1960s/70s and he came to a notorious druggy area of full of drop outs.

Brand was cautioned by an American community worker for handing out bribe money on camera to many of the homeless junkies there ... and brand just turned round to him and said "what do you know, if she's a crack addict and whether or not drugs are bad for you !"....

I just thought to myself 'this guy is the biggest wanka on planet Earth' ... the shameful product of our British society ... proping up the scum and the filth and elevating them seems to be the in thing these days.

Oh come one. You're all intelligent. Read between the lines.

He did NOT phone 999. He did NOT phone the Police.

He phoned Crimestoppers, AKA "the anonymous snitching service". "Crimestoppers Trust is a Company Limited by Guarantee". Not paid for by the taxpayer.

"Northamptonshire officers have not confirmed whether any action would be taken against Brand" - that's because there is none they can take. He has not wasted police time nor committed a crime.

He wasted three minutes of a volunteer's time. That's all. Three minutes.

Now consider the far more high-brow programme on Radio 4: Dead Ringers. They've been making prank calls FOR YEARS and then broadcasting their poor humiliated victims on national radio.

You are all choosing to believe a news story and behaving like Daily Express readers with a knee-jerk reaction, and just because it is Russell Brand and it is fashionable to pick on him.

OK, so you want to show how clever and classy you are by joining the hate club and hating him.

It's not working. Your behaviour reminds me of the tossers that stood outside cinemas with placards when Life of Brian came out: "I don't need to see it to know it is sinful".
My all-time favourite Dilbert cartoon, this is: BTW, a Dumpster is a brand of skip, I think.

          RC, good post.

Personally I don't find the guy funny and know nothing about the incident but good point well put.

RC, I can't agree with you on this one.

Nobody's suggesting that he abused the 999 service. However he abused a public service which, despite its apparent status of being a "Company Limited by Guarantee" is, in practice, funded entirely or almost entirely by the local police authority and local authority in any given area.

This Brand (never was a name so apt) simply wanted to raise some laughs from his audience, and was unable to do so on his own merits. If he is unable to entertain his audience through his own innate wit, then he shouldn't bother trying to recycle Dead Ringers which did silly things like getting Tom Baker to call a minicab firm and ask for a taxi to Gallifrey (Radio 4 original version) - Brand's puerile attempts are purely derivative, and unworthy of notice.

As he has nothing more original to offer than the abuse of a service intended to help people report crime in circumstances where they are too frightened to do so by the normal means (and such places and social contexts exist less than a mile from where I sit typing this) I would suggest that his career (such as it is) has run its course, and he should now be permitted to sink back into the obscurity that he so justly deserves.
