I've run out of time to answer all that T.E., but...

The fact that you feel the cleanup cost is justified is a matter for you. Personally I don't because I don't feel that the damage the car does is in anyway near the scale you suggest.
I don't really get where I'm being a hypocrite here? I keep saying that I have a car and I find it useful sometimes. The rest of my posts are just trying to point out the ways in which cars damage the environment and justify the charges we all have to pay. It's all falling on deaf ears though, so probably not much point droning on any longer really.

Blimey, talk about a "them" and "us" schism on the car v bike brigade.

Personally, I don't care how many wheels, legs, tentacles, whatever you have, nor how much room you take up or damage you do to the road.

What matters is the fact that you are using the road, and as such, a global tax on use seems more fairer than a tax based on height, weight, damage or colour of your paintwork.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Not really. Being deliberately obtuse with tree huggers is a fun past-time though.

Ah, so you're a car driver.

Does it have to be either/or though?

Agreed, but the point which Dang seems to be going on about is the excessive damage the car does to the environment. I don't think it does anywhere near the amount of damage he suggests. He talks of car related litter in terms of hub caps and glass strewn about our roads and that just isn't the case. Since he percieves the damage to the environment caused by the car as being higher than I do he can justify the high cost of owning one. I feel that the damage done is much lower than dang states and so the huge cost to the environment should be reduced.

I'm not pro car or anti bike. It just bugs me when people who choose to cycle (becuase it fits in with their lifestyle) feel they can pontificate to the rest of us. As a kid in Holland I used to cycle to school on a dialy basis because it was safe to do so and the school was a reasonable distance away. Once I got back to England in 1977, although my school was about the same distance from home I couldn't cycle to school because it was too dangerous. In holland we had our own road network purely for bikes, in England you were mixed in with the general traffic. And from my point of view it was lorries and busses which were far more dangerous than cars. This didn't make me anti car or anti bike - it's just our towns and cities were not designed in a bike friendly way.

because the exercise is part of the biking experience. If I want to be driven on 2 wheels I would get a Triumph Speed Triple

                  Er...why should I?

I want to drive a car. I drive a car. I pay what needs to be paid. The end.

There are other reasons to use a bike than for exercise. Getting rained on is also part of the biking experience but not necessarily why you'd choose to use a bicycle. Aside from two wheels, a motorbike is a different proposition to a bicycle. You can't push it around with you around the shops, fold it up or park in a convenient place outside shops. You also need tax, MOT, insurance. Different beast altogether.

The main reason why I don't ride a bicycle, electric or other wise is because God helped Man invent the V8 engine.

                      Enough said.
