At the start of april I paid for a year's worth of London congestion charge at the reduced rate, being a resident, and confirmed on the phone with Transport for London (TFL) that everything was then fine for me to drive.

A month later I started receiving a flurry of penalty notices, five in total, and on phoning again it turned out that the computer had wrongly set my start date to April 20! WTF!!

I'm reliably informed that, when it comes to these modern surveillance systems and computer databases, those that have done nothing wrong have nothing to worry about. Therefore, you should just stop moaning and pay up as you clearly must have done something wrong.

I am sufficiently ignorant to believe everything that a computer tells me as it can't possibly be wrong either due to a bug or human error. Therefore you should tell them to get lost as they have screwed up.

It is a pity that you did not write to confirm what they said. Now the only proof you have of the original transaction was the tapes that are in TfL's possession.

Indeed with anything legal it is always worth having a written copy of what was said - even to the extent of having the letters delivered registered post - thereby ensuring that there is a paper trail showing actual delivery.
