Essentially I'm saying I overtake doing the speed limit, and no longer worry so much if in the process I hold up for a few seconds someone else "overtaking" at a higher speed than me. Though if they're going a lot quicker than me, say 20-30 rather 10mph quicker, and therefore likely to be held up more than usual, I will put my foot down to get out of their way.

Apparently Dodgy things it's selfish of me to hold him up for those few seconds, but not selfish of him to require me to permanently stay below my desired speed, so that I don't slow down his "overtaking". (I assume he's so irate because he sees himself as the driver whose "overtaking" speed is so much higher than mine.)

I can only dream of speeds in excess of 70. Traffic means it's seldom possible anywhere near London. I always travel as fast as I can, though seldom exceeding the speed limit. The average speed recorded by my car over a working week is 21mph!

You need to read Roadcraft then. Or talk to a Police Driver. The idea is to minimise yout time exposed to danger. If that means you (oh horrors!) have to accelerate to the speed of the Lane 3 traffic so as not to require others to take evasive action, then f***ing do it. If you can't, don't overtake.

Same rules on an A road, come to that. A traffic cop will not do you for 80 in a 60 if you're overtaking a car doing 45, as long as you get back below 60 as soon as is reasonably practical.

Trouble is if you have a crash while doing 80 in a 60 they'll throw the book at you regardless of how sensible it was at the time.

If you are driving safely, why would you have a crash?

You're also more likely to have one dragging along the wrong side of the road for longer than strictly necessary.

Or by forcing following traffic to brake for no reason other than you suddenly appearing in front of them at significantly slower speed.

Or chatting on your mobile while doing your nails.

Driving isn't dangerous. 90% of drivers are, though.

If by pulling out you will cause another driver to take evasive action (ie brake) then you should not pull out. You should slow down to the speed of your lane untill it is safe to pull out.
Even if the other driver is speeding you are obliged to give way to them (unless they are going so fast you cant see them).
