I still don't understand why they don't just chuck all that rubbish down mount Vesuvius. It probably won't erupt for centuries, and by that time the rubbish will all have burnt to a crisp and there'll be hordes of robots to clean up the mess in an hour or two.
BTW did you visit Caserta as someone recommended?
I didn't visit Caserta, sorry, too much to do. But I did see volcanic activity on the mountain next to Vesuvius, to the North, three or four plumes of heavy smoke coming out of the mountainside, quite low down. Very spectacular

I wouldn't go back to Italy, bad roads, bad drivers, awful food, rip-off prices -
I'd agree about the drivers. Driving rules for Italians seem to be a form of advice than actual law. Driving on your bumper, double\triple parking and senselessly beeping the horn all wind me up no end.
Prices and quality of food vary greatly in my experience, particularly in touristy places.
He must have stopped at autogrills or similar places (these are chains of restaurants on the motorways). However, I'd rather eat out in those places than in many other restaurants around the world.
I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.
Are you going through Switzerland ? I went through Chambery in France instead because the weather was bad. We did it in two days, about 850 miles per day
some big big tunnels through the Alps
I plan on going down to Grenoble and do the route napoleon. Then the coast road through Liguria and down...
