The trick of driving on the Autostrada is that the speed limit is actually the minimum. Once you've understood that, it's a breeze.

    I hate driving in Italy.

He must have stopped at autogrills or similar places (these are chains of restaurants on the motorways). However, I'd rather eat out in those places than in many other restaurants around the world.

I'd agree about the drivers. Driving rules for Italians seem to be a form of advice than actual law. Driving on your bumper, double\triple parking and senselessly beeping the horn all wind me up no end.

Prices and quality of food vary greatly in my experience, particularly in touristy places.

Well, its subjective isn't it. Just my opinion.
If you were travelling fast through Italy, where would you eat Francko ?

I didn't visit Caserta, sorry, too much to do. But I did see volcanic activity on the mountain next to Vesuvius, to the North, three or four plumes of heavy smoke coming out of the mountainside, quite low down. Very spectacular

Funny how the guide in Pompeii kept explaining how the inhabitants 2000 years ago kept the place very clean

I went about £900 over my budget due to the toll roads in France and Italy, plus the high cost of fuel on the motorways. The hotels were very cheap, I didnt have to pay more than £50 for a decent room. Herculaneum and Pompeii were well worth the visit and I had six days close contact with my son, eyeball to eyeball.
Thats what I did it for really, a bit of male bonding.

Go down the coast to Amalfi. Very very nice.
