Why does it seem sensible?
The sign is telling you what the maximum speed of that stretch of road is, not the minimum. Also, 50mph in the dry? wet? Ice? Snow?
Or can't you make that decision for yourself?Comment

Churchill: no kids (thankfully) - doesn't give a tulip. Going to be a migistrate so will naturally side with speeding drivers over kids' lives anyway. No brainer. Responsible for his own actions, but only when they affect just him. Anyone else and it's back to my original argument - shrug of the shoulders.
I've said all I want to now as I'm off home in a minute, so over to your more enlightened opinions.
I am a bit disappointed you dont want to discuss this - but I am sure we are all grateful for your pearls of wisdom and will soon realize where we have been going wrong.Comment

I told him it was a poor argument, but he wouldn't listen.
Unfortunately, most drivers haven't my driving skill. Nor are they as able to read the road conditions and drive safely and sensibly. These people DO need to keep to speed limits. So, to protect the rest of us from these numpties, the government imposes speed limits. If speed limits were abolished we'd need a much much harder driving test, and regularl re-testing.Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!Comment

Its relevant because the limits have been put in place with knowledge of a number of factors that may not be apparent when you are driving, e.g. normal road conditions in the area, traffic merging in ahead, road narrowing ahead, blind summit, blind bend, farm, any number of other things ahead, acceptable noise levels in the local environment. And so on.
The limits are not always appropriate but to ignore them is arrogant and disrespectful of other road users (to whom you have a moral responsibility), IMO.Comment
