Did you know that the sum total of social spending (social security, healthcare and education) is considerably more than the sum total raised by income taxes? (Income taxes = income tax, National Insurance and Corporation Tax.)

Now even the least socialist countries usually have social spending up to a point, e.g. on basic education, nevertheless, social spending is not a core function of the state. So, in principal, you could leave social spending in its natural home in the private sector and abolish all income taxes in the UK, and there would still be change left over you could use to reduce the rate of VAT.

Excellent points - my view is Income Tax should be abolished -the savings derived from dismantling the Tax Gathering machine would be enormous - and as for the displaced Civil Servnats - are there no workhouses ?

Now that would be a truly Moral action.

            Hot off the press -

Yorkshire Nurse having served over 40 years in the NHS has been informed that her pension entitlement from her contributions totals just TWENTY ONE PENCE (40 CENTS) per week.
The Nurse, whose identity we have chosen not to reveal, recently injured herself at work and like many other female Nurses was given the option to pay just 50% National Insurance contributions, known in Britain as the stamp, no mention was made of the future consequences of taking such an opt-out and despite the years of service the Nurse has been informed she will not receive any disability payments or similar benefits due to failing to pay enough National Insurance contributions.

I would say it is reasonable and just, that over one's lifetime one should pay for the actual benefits of society that one has received over the same period.

So by my reckoning the thieving bastards owe me a few million!

Interesting - I have now decided that everybody else has a moral obligation to pay all taxes that the State demands - except for me - because I am not everybody else and - I didnt start the Napoleonic Wars - not on my watch.

                  Perfect - and Fair.

Cant there be certain opt-outs for tax?

                    i.e.
I pay for private schooling so dont need public schools,
I pay for private medical and healthcare so dont need NHS,
I pay my (now huge) car tax to use the roads (and am in favour of toll roads)
I pay my council tax to fund police/firemen/wastecollection/olympics(!!)
I fund my own pension, so am happy to opt out of state pension

All in all, I wont be using as much state money/freebies hence they should charge me only 10% on everything?
