I received my first ever speeding ‘Notice of Intended Prosecution’ today - and it came in a white envelope. Apparently I was doing 37 mph in a 30 mph zone (caught by 'Manual detection' whatever that means, maybe a man with a speed gun on a turkey shoot). I’m a little suspicious but I’m not going to challenge it. My choices are:
Challenge it (max £1000 fine, 3-6 points or disqualification)
‘Nominate’ another driver
Pay £60 and get 3 penalty points
Go on a SpeedChoice driver education course (3 hours) also costing £60. I don’t get penalty points or convictions if I go for this option. I’m not sure whether that also means I don’t need to tell my insurance company though.
I’m going on the SpeedChoice course I think. Questions or comments welcome.
Generally speaking if you can't recall the place where you got nabbed means that you were not paying attention to where you were driving - though in some cases talivans are located in such a way that you won't know about them at all, ie on a bridge over motorway but shooting you in the back, so you can't really seen them.
Unless you are very confident you can prove it was not you, then go on SpeedChoice course - it's a no brainer really.
Challenging won't give you more points - but you will get slapped with court costs which are usually very low. The downside is that getting fixed penalty might be deemed of a lesser offence than getting same points in court hearing, well, this is certainly the case for immigration purposes in the UK!
Also invest into radar detector and more importantly don't break speed limits.

A speed limiter would be handy too. I have a feeling I was caught on a downhill stretch of a wide open road. At the risk of sounding like Jeremy Clarkson, dodgy, et. al. you'd need to keep your eyes glued to the speedo to keep to 30mph at all times. 25mph may be a safer option.

No wonder people can't keep their eye on the speedo - too busy on phone or eating...
But surely it won't work well in 30-40 mph roads? I mean the speed limiter would actually need to know current speed limit, is this info available in such a form to enable speed limiters to do their job? I thought not.
I agree that speed trap enforcement is not done correctly in this country, though myself I was only done once for alleged speeding (4 years ago), but these days I relax and stick to the speed limit more or less religiously (if that's possible for an atheist).
