Just a reminder about the debate

The operative word is DRUGS

The debate is not "my daughter's friend sniffed a bit of cocaine at the weekend". Its about getting into drugs.

I think this needs to be taken seriously.

Yes of course it may turn out to be nothing more than a one off sniff at the weekend, but then again this could be a serious problem, and drugs is a serious problem, including alcohol. I would give the same advice if the friend was getting blotto every night.

Good point.....I would say to that.......except that it isn't a good point at all in this particularl topic, simply because this is a legal argument not just a moral one.

By that stance she should be doing as many drugs as possible whilst she's under the age of adult responsibility then stop at 18 once she's got it out of her system.

Bit late on this this thread but the legality of health risks of drugs are not usually the main priority for a lot people in the SD's daughter's age group. Peer pressure, willingness to experiment or a desire to assert your individuality are more important factors. And of course, a predilection to getting off your nut.

There is loads of info about addictive patterns etc. but the fact remains that the majority of people who take drugs don't go on to destroy their lives through addiction - the same applies for alcohol. Equally, some people do go down that road and it is not so easy to head them off at the pass. I recently read an article that claimed that education doesn't even play too big a part in it - you can know all the risks and still steam ahead.

For what its worth, I've got a bit of track record in wasterdom and I have often thought about what I'd tell my wee boy when he gets older. Trouble is, I can't think of anything I could say that would have deterred me when I was a boy except to try and build a relationship with him that precludes him from having to get wasted as a statement (v. difficult to articulate this actually!)

Absolute numbers are meaningless when you consider how much more prevalent drinking is.

Many more people drink than take class A drugs. If you normalised the data by usage you would see how much more dangerous drug taking is.

Add to that it's harder to prove drug related death, e.g. if you die of a heart attack, poisoning or an aneurism it may not be apparent it was drug related. many drug deaths will not be classified as such. Alcohol abuse will always be apparent in autopsy of the liver.

Alcohol related deaths are not sudden, many of these people will become old.

Yep, many more people drinks alcohol than take drugs, but many more people die of alcohol related disease. We're throwing opinions around like fact, then it's helpful to back up that up with some hard facts.

Where's your proof that drug takers die younger then alcohol consumers - what do you base this on? Many drug takers get old, and usually stop, wheras many alcohol consumers get old and consume more. Why is one so inherently worse than the other - if the problem is the illigal part, which has been stated then legalisation would seem like the next step.

Almost all of my biggest regrets in life have happened when I'm pissed, and the times where I've come closet to killing myself also. Thing is I like a beer, and I'd be p'd off if you tried to ban that. I accept the status quo on the legality of drugs, but it's the hypocrisy of this comparison I find a bit annoying. Those of us who've taken them seem to hold a very consistent view, which to me seems to lie in the all things in moderation - no harm done train of thought. Those agaist seem to be rehashing stereotypes which actually don't really apply in the majority of cases.
