    Being outsourced to India

    Our IB project is being taken over from internal to managed service. Company that is doing the takeover specialises in outsourcing to India, although it's being sold to us purely as a transfer of management from internal to external vendor. Obvious scenario is that they keep us on for a while, acquire our expertise, then replace us with Indians.

    Does anyone have any experience of this? Thoughts on my negotiating position?

    What position would that be then?

    If you have specialised knowledge you may want to offer training or documentation. Other than that I'd start looking for a new contract...

      You go till your contract expires like nothing has happened. Your not a permie so worrying about the role going abroad doesn't matter.

      If your contract expires then screw them.

        Everyone is being given notice to end their contracts and re-sign with the new company.

            The only really comment I can make is it may not be all bad.

            I've achieved at least a 25% increase on my daily rate in less than a year through no particular bargaining on my part. We want you and here is an incentive to stay.

            On Monday I start with the outsource team as the only Englishmen. This could put me in a strong position but only time will tell.

            The only thing I would advise is that you ensure you have the ability to give notice if things don't work out.

              Worked in 3 places were they out sourced or set up there own indian dev centres. In most case the only work they see is the standard stuff that can be done without any business interaction / knowledge. Its going to happen best thing you can do is make sure you are very business facing then they cant outsource you.

              Current gig Im the outsourced bod, all of the team and users are based in San Fran 8hrs behind, it ******* sucks, it just isnt working and thats because I cant get the contact with the business I need, mad rush at 5pm or like today come in at 3pm work till 11pm, dont think I will be here long

                Drag out the knowledge transfer as long as possible.
                Highlight any fook-ups by managed service company to management in regular unemotional and factual reports. Always suggest ways of improving the process (that also leads to more work).
                Don't give up the real business knowledge unless asked a direct question. Keep that to yourself.

                You can turn this to your advantage for a few months to several years if you play it cool and professional.

                  It is no bad thing - just something else for your CV -

                  "Experienced with outsourcing project work to third party overseas vendors"
                  (or something like this)

                  I got a call just this week because of my experience when we got outsourced to India. Just get stuck in, and mop up as much experience as possible. Make sure you leave your contact details so that when it all goes wrong and they bring it back, you get a call for that job.

                    Depends. I was in this position last year, we got Indian bosses and the team was gradually 'deanglified' (sp?). I eventually got squeezed out but interestingly my workload went to the Philippines rather than India when it went offshore.
