    Vfm

If you want VFM (value for money) Maxjet from Stansted or even Air India from Heathrow (if you don't mind the spots!) offer the best deals to JFK. Excellent meals and in-flight service normally for just over £ 1000! I recommend both.

I've had good and bad flights with Virgin and BA. I recall never having a bad flight with United. I'd love to try one of the new business class airlines, but I haven't been over to the US for 3 years now

I'm planning on going to NY for my birthday (40th) and using my 120,000 American Airlines points for the trip. I'll also be cashing in my 200,000 Marriott points. I'm hoping that the travel and hotel are free and I can spend lots on beer and toys. I'm not to sure if I should use my points to try for an upgrade to business though. Obviously I'll be on business for tax purposes! Given the state of the $ I'll probably try to get the ticket bought out there for me.
Rule Number 1 - Assuming that you have a valid contract in place always try to get your poo onto your timesheet, provided that the timesheet is valid for your current contract and covers the period of time that you are billing for.

          I preferred version 1!

I would not get into aircraft for 10 ours flying over water (I can't swim) even if they paid me £500 to fly to NY.

Remember that you still have to pay for APD even on a free ticket. So it might cost you £100 or so.

I'd pay for the flight, use points for the upgrade if they will let you. Some airlines will, but some don't.

I think hitting the water in a 747 and the ability to swim is only going to make a marginal difference to your chances of survival. Plus you do get a life jacket with a whistle and a small bulb on it which should se you through any problems you might face while bobbing about in the freezing cold North Atlantic.
