Vienna is a vibrant city though the organised tourists are a right pain.
There are a number of excellent hotels in the city centre. We stayed near te opera house but cant remember what it was called.
Fantastic places to eat and drink and some terrific museums and galaries.

Christmas Markets: Depends what you are looking for and where you go. A couple of cities just cater for the tourists and tend to be tat. Other places are fantastic, but a lot of it may not be to your taste.
I like the glass baubles, traditional knutcrackers and carousels etc, but go more for the gluwein ad bratwurst stalls these days. Munich is good, Ulm is nicely parochial and Heidelberg is great. Nurnburg is big, but it is where all the coach tours go.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

I went to Vienna a few weeks back. The main trip was to Bratislava(Slovakia) with Ryanair which cost 42 quid return from Stanstead. Both cities are well worth a visit with loads of historic architecture and Vienna is only about 50km from Bratislava for only approx 7.5 Euros return by train. There is also a ship that runs down the Danube between the two cities which takes about 2 hours.

I've been to Wien four times, and I saw ........the airport

BTW, anyone know what those two enormous buildings near to the airport are?
They look like normal detached houses, only scaled up about ten times....

There was an awful lot of building going on around the airport in 2007.

I flew BA from Manchester and Berlin Air from Belfast/Stanstead.

I cycle to the airport and then use a jetpack.

            Threaded.

Not quite too sure where the airport is as I drove there but I did stay in the World Trade Center, which was a shock. Thats a large building area which could be it...

Bratislava. Seriously - it's about an hour's drive or you can go on the train, again about an hour.

                    Houses are considerably cheaper.
