The amount British banks have been forced to write off as bad debt has jumped by a fifth to almost £9bn. It is a stark sign that households are struggling to keep up their repayments.

Lenders had to write off £2.3bn worth of bad debts in the second quarter - up from the £2.1bn in the previous quarter, according to figures published by the Bank of England.

£3.2bn of credit card debts have been written off in the past year

The total was almost 20pc higher than the same period last year, and economists said it was the latest sign indebted families are failing to manage their debt burden effectively.
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

These are the feckers who tried to take me to court when I was a student over a £300 overdraft. I owed the University some money and the way they dealt with that was that they took the money out of your grant cheque (remember those?) at the beginning of term and gave you the the difference. Barclays insisted that in order to keep my student account going (ie. prove I was still a student), they wanted to see my grant cheque themselves each term. Obviously this wasn't possible in this case as the University had it, so rather than just confirm with the University that I was still a student, they froze my account and started sending me nasty letters followed by a summons.

In the end, another bank bailed me out and took on my measly £300 overdraft.

Barclays deserve everything they get IMO, and bu99er the consequences.

              From the Telegraph.

Barclays pleaded for permission to issue a statement clarifying the reason behind the move but the BoE refused, fuelling rumours. Diamond declined to comment in detail but said: "We are awash with liquidity. . . This was a technical borrowing, based on the system going down. . . It's too bad it was allowed to get that much buzz in the market."
I wonder what the BoE refused to let Barclays publish?

                Barclays.

A Big World needs a Big Bank, which in turn needs an even Bigger Bank.

Gordon had imposed a windfall tax on Barclays?

Has anyone else in the risk business had people asking questions about a ‘big named financial institution’ (that may or may not be the subject of this topic) which may be failing?

The subject of this topic is not a client of mine (and will never be) and in any case I study the details of the commodities not the players. However, I’ve had a couple of people this weekend asking if I’ve seen or know anything about anyone (no names) who is showing signs of “distress”.

Do you remember years back- the Barclays Bomber?

The police always put out these statements that they were looking for somebody with a grudge against Barclays:

So that would be about 20% of the population then.
