How convenient. Israel, the only place in the middle east that is a democracy that is governed by the people. It is surrounded by evil and corrupt regimes that persecute their own people and feather the nests of the leaders. These countries are the most racist and brutal in the world and to hold little Israel up as the pariah is an astonishingly cowardly act of hypocrisy.

The whole essence of Shariah law (oh we are so clever because we can google our knowledge of the Koran,Quran or whatever)has little to do with words in a bible but everything to do with the subjugation of women by groups of pathetic mysoginists.

If you are questioning Israel's right to exist and if you are accusing them of ethnic cleansing then you can accuse any country of the same things.

    Israel represents two things.

    1. In the middle east it is a threat to the totalitarian authorities and religious leaders of middle eastern countries because it stands up to the evils perpetuated by its neighbouring states, and it represents the sort of freedoms that women in particular should be entitled to.

    2. The liberal left in the west love to hate Israel, why? because of old fashioned guilt. The guilt is that these people know that our society is a free, affluent and streets ahead in terms of civilisation. Instead of looking at these people from other countries and treating them on as equals they feel sorry for them, and hold this guilt ridden patronising attitude of "there there we know you poor things are poorer and not as clever as us so here we will hate Israel with you, we will allow you to practice shariah law in our country because we feel guilty"

So these cowardly haters of Israel are pathetic people who refuse to stand up for themselves and treat these people as equals and say for example "fine, you live here, you live according to our rules and we in return will respect you and your rights on an equal basis to everyone else in this country, and by the way leave Israel alone".

You may think that it is awfully liberal to support groups like Hamas, but once you have helped them to destroy Israel, then I am sfraid that you people are next, and you better get your missus circumcised PDQ.

"As in all the churches of the holy ones, women should keep silent in the churches, for they are not allowed to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says. But if they want to learn anything, they should ask their husbands at home. For it is improper for a woman to speak in the church." (1 Corinthians 14:33-35)

"Women should listen and learn quietly and submissively. I do not let women teach men or have authority over them. Let them listen quietly. For God made Adam first, and afterward he made Eve. And it was the woman, not Adam, who was deceived by Satan, and sin was the result. But women will be saved through childbearing and by continuing to live in faith, love, holiness, and modesty." (1 Timothy 2:11-15)

        Debunk:
        Lebanon - Weird multi-faith democracy
Egypt - Democracy, last elections in 2005
Jordan - Constitutional Monarchy - able to be over-ruled by National Assembly
        Syria - Single party rule

Wrong side of the bed this morning?

FWIW, I'm no fan of Israel's subjugation of the Palestinians and their continual land grabs. I'm also no fan of Syria attempts to get terrorists to wipe Isreal off the face of the earth.

It's a complex situation, one which can never be fully appreciated from an office in the Docklands.

I'm a bit confused there dodgy. Are you unloading all this tuff on me - i.e. saying that this is my position, e.g.: supporting Hamas, questioning Israel's right to exist. Because they're not my position. My point was that my anti-zionism (whatever you may think of it) does not make me an anti-semite.

Daily Mail has form going back a long way. From early 20th century (1905 ish?) Jewish immigration to support for Moseley's British Union of Fascists in the '30s ('Hurrah for the Blackshirts' is the quoted headline but I don't know whether that's an urban myth or not). I don't know of anything post-war, but I don't know whether they've apologised either.

The founders of the Daily Mail (Lord Rothmere (sp?) and his brother) were strong supporters of Mussolini, Hitler and Mosley. IIRC they published an article saying that hitler 'would be a popular person in Britain'

                  Not nice people really.

As an aside, who could have predicted that educated, western technologists (er, us) would be quoting from the Koran chapter and verse in 2007. What a strange state of affairs.

Has anyone any thoughts on how or when the enlightenment will take place in Islamic countries? I'm getting worried that it never will, considering the Islamic stance on non-criticism...and the Koran being the literal word of God.
I wonder how many dissidents and free-thinkers are itching to publish atheist, or at least agnostic, ideas in these countries.

Don't know about agnostics and atheists. Ther are voices calling for a Reformation in Islam, but they have to speak carefully in many of these countries.
