This goes off on a whole other tack, but we should not be writing off our own, we should be training them and placing them in work. Possibly by subsidising employers or possibly making foreign imports far more expensive.
Employers are taking the piss by paying below standard wages so that locals can't take the job and then employing cheap foreignors.
It is not always the unskilled either.
A mate is a local mechanic recently made redundant (dont go that route) replaced with a Pole.
Other lads have left because Poles have reset all diagnostic machines so they cant read em.
Some of these guys are unemployed, not unemployable.

Well - I think we're in agreement that we should be training them - then they will be employable. I hope that nothing I've posted suggests I want to write them off.
Are employers taking the p1ss? Probably but they'll work within the market and the standard wage is the standard wage. Whether suppreessing wage inflation is a good thing or not is an economic question beyond me. I'm afraid.
Can't talk to the case of your mate, I'm afraid, but sounds like the employer's appalling (and maybe behaving illegally?)
I agree that these guys are unemployed, not unemployable, but they are a different case from the underclass who are not actually the topic of this thread either.

I expect there have been various schemes like this (YTS?) but I don't know what the eveidence is one way or the other.

The issue we have is how can we tell the difference? When doctors start blowing us up, it gets difficult to see where we can identify loonies from the rest.

I merely asked out of curiosity, It now appears that of the eight terrorists so far under arrest, 5 are doctors and 2 are medical students.
This would indicate that a very very minute percentage of these doctors want us dead.

Faced with a choice, I.e. 100 doctors in a hospital to choose from, one of whom wants you dead, you do not know which one it is!
