It Looks Like an Organised Terrorist Campaign Has Started
The IRA didn't tend to blow themselves up though.
Apart from the two idiots that managed to kill themselves and demolish a Barclays by mistake in St Albans about 20 years ago.
There were also a few in NI, until they realised that the security services had cottoned on to the fact that they were using radio-controlled detonation, and were broadcasting the signal continuously. So when they armed the bomb, just before placing it....... surprise!
There are significant differences when comparing the Irish question with this current terrorist threat:
- IRA had a well developed political wing - with seats in the commons they may have not always attended, but the intent was clear.
- Dialogue channels were always open between Downing street and the Provos - I include Thatcher and most importantly Major years in this.
- Co operation between Irish and British Governments increased throughout the 80's especially amongst SB on both sides.
- By the late 80's early 90's the shift to a political solution was clearly being considered by the PIRA, Province ops by the PIRA were too costly against the British Army, and Killing Civilians in the UK or NI proved deeply unpopular in Eire. (Warrington and Omagh effectively finished the PIRA campagn - the Continuity IRA responsible for Omagh were all but eliminated by the PIRA)
- Most Irish if not all in the UK were horrified at their countrymens actions
by contrast
- Al-Q do not seem to wish to engage in dialogue [at this stage], and seem to have no intent, infact the US/GB administrations don't seem to be actively pursuing this either.
- If you don't engage in dialogue, or seek to gather information regarding their mindset, then you can't begin to either a) close them down or b) mediate some form of a settlement or c) see where they are going.
One thing's for sure, this latest bunch looked very amateur, but just how many other cells or groups are there out there, and the first and most important mistake is not to underestimate your opponent - something which the US would do well to adhere to in Iraq.
Noticed that "semtex" was mentioned in news reports as being the main choice of explosive by the IRA, not entirely true, semtex was often used as a starter blast, but the main explosive was usually home cooked fertilizer slurry, what these clowns lacked was a starter, the propane would have gone off nice and tidy thank you if the starter had worked.
