How can I responsibly get rid of a big old CRT monitor? Some kind of hi-tech rag and bone man would be appreciated!

Try a few local charities instead.
One close to me will pick up monitors and PC's for £25 and then salvage bits to make semi-decent machines for the third world. (CRT monitors are turned in to TV's apparently)Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.
