Misguided, murderous fanactics - even with the inevitable spin from the victors writing the story.
More interesting is the state of the country that allowed this to happen. After the first world war, the allies demanded immediate war reparations (you can argue whether they deserved it/the timescale/punitive element). This destroyed Germany and lead to the emergence of groups such as this with popular support from a broken people. Only in such extreme situations would such an extreme solution be seen as the best option by the majority turning on the minority (everyone for themsleves)
Once the madmen had taken control and given themselves absolute power, then the things we know about were capable of happening.
Nothing like it could happen here ? Turn off the water, electricity, gas, supply of food, law and order - people will be killing each other in the streets in a week.

I don't know where this myth crops up from about the German war machine and their military might. I have watched a number of programs which debunk this myth. From what I can tell the Germans were totally inept and a fair proportion seemed to have homo tendencies. As for the Gestapo (sp?) they were not this feared organisation either. Yes they often made references to people being taken out and shot, but I doubt they ever really did it. Much of the programme I saw seemed to involve a the occupants of a small French town and how the resistance seemed to run rings around the hapless Germans. Indeed the local cafe owner and a big player in the local resistance movement seemed more concerned with having a bit of a grope with his waitresses rather than what the Germans would do to him. What was interesting was how poor the UK secret service was in these times. They placed a policeman into the village who managed to mis-pronounce pretty much every second word.

Firstly have you seen their planes? They had skies at the front to land, whose bright idea was that because I hope they got shot!

Also they had no idea how to make decent cars until the brits lent a hand after the war and created the VW brand. (Second thoughts, we're the idiots as the only lasting car empire we created is credited to the germans!)

Rommel certainly did wonders with a lot less resources against numerical superiority of allies in Africa. I am not sure any nation would have fought for longer than Germans did in their case of very limited supplies, especially fuel.
