The pilot claimed they couldn't move out the way in time. I am no pilot but those parachute things are generally quite large and brightly coloured, so you'd hope they'd be visible

A quick look at the Schmittenhöhe website shows there a strict glide paths to follow, it appears she deviated from the route to go long distance.

They are generally, as LM says, large and brightly coloured so long as boyo is looking outside and not scribbling on his kneeboard before replying, tuning the radio, staring at the magenta line on a screen somewhere on the cockpit or changing tanks. Plus the aircraft in question has tulip visibility of anything cut off by the engine.

Doesn't take long before that smudge on the windscreen becomes something real. Not defending the above or providing an excuse as they're called visual flight rules for a reason.
