    BOOM: Fish

"Chip shops face 'extinction' amid cost of living crisis

Fish and chip shops are facing "extinction" amid rising costs, an industry body has warned.

Some shops in the West of England say the soaring price of cod, sunflower oil and energy has left them struggling.

The National Federation of Fish Friers is urging the government to cut VAT and help shops with energy bills.

A government spokesman said it is supporting businesses "of all sizes by slashing fuel duty" and introducing a 50% business rates relief.

The federation has secured a meeting with ministers on Thursday to push its message that the industry needs help."

    Good for fishes*, no?

    * fishes - correct plural form for when multiple species of fish described, ie: salmon+pike etc

We’re on an Island, literally surrounded by fish. I’m ooop North so the frier runs on coal, also abundant here. Unless there’s a lard crisis I don’t really foresee any problem.

      The potato crop has failed!

      https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/new...ybody-24817942

The cost of chips could soar within weeks and shortages are feared after the heatwave hit potato crops this summer. Suppliers said the main potato crop has wilted in the heatwave this summer.
It is feared the British staple takeaway could skyrocket in price by October - and may even rise as soon as September, in just a fortnight's time.

One wholesaler told The Grocer magazine: “ There is a lot of speculation at the moment. The chip guys have already put through significant increases in the last 12 months due to fuel and energy costs and this is the next opportunity for them to increase the price.
