Due to the nature of it's spike protien the virus was always likely to get milder over time as we are now seeing with omicron:

I very much doubt there is widespread faking - wouldn't work on the follow up PCR, anyway.

They've done literally nothing to prevent spread in schools, almost as if they wanted as many kids as possible to catch it - so let's hope there are no long term ramifications.

I can't think of many friends of my kids (primary and secondary) who haven't had it, and yet we had got away with it until Saturday just gone, when my eldest tested positive (LFT & PCR, with symptoms). Now waiting for youngest to get it, and I guess I have been "challenged" by the virus myself so we'll see how that pans out. Son has been symptomatic since Saturday so I guess we are looking at the rest of the household getting it, or not, within the next couple of days..

OK, interesting piece, but he suggests that the decoupling of severe cases from infection numbers is entirely down to population immunity - which is pretty much exactly what we saw with delta here in the UK. He specifically stated that he did not think - or that there was not enough information to conclude - that this was due to reduced virulence of Omicron. Also worth bearing in mind that much of the population immunity in SA comes from prior infection, not vaccines.

                  Opinion vs facts:

"Experts in South Africa, where omicron has been circulating for longer, have also urged caution on jumping to conclusions.

There have been some suggestions that the case fatality rate has dropped to 0.5 per cent, while early data paints a picture of hospitals treating fewer people with oxygen in intensive care.

But hospitalisations have risen steadily, with 4,200 admissions on Monday – about six times the level reported three weeks ago. Statisticians have warned against over-interpreting the limited data available.

“In 10 days there will be a much clearer picture of how the severe the new variant is around Gauteng province, as well as the evolution of mortality in the country,” Professor Tom Moultrie, a demographer at the University of Cape Town, told the Telegraph, referring to the province at the epicentre of the country’s omicron wave.

Experts also pointed to Wednesday as a potentially significant moment; the South African Medical Research Council is set to release excess death figures for the last two weeks, and it’s hoped this may shed more light on the situation. "
