    Asda Screwed Over Equal Pay

Equal pay for work of equal value.

    https://www.theguardian.com/business...equal-pay-case

Asda shop workers have won the latest stage in their fight for equal pay in a ruling that could lead to a £500m compensation claim.

The supreme court has ruled that the shop workers, who are mostly women, can compare their work to those in the distribution centre.

About 35,000 shop workers say they should be paid the same as the predominantly male staff who work in the chain’s distribution depots, and who receive a higher wage.

The win is the first major stage of the long-running court battle that has implications for workers in all the major supermarkets.

It was cheaper for Walmart to settle then drag it to the Supreme Court.

Two lots of legal fees plus the payout.

Ah so two different jobs in two different environments with two different skill requirements now must pay equal because of chromosomes. This equality stuff seems to be really working.

An Asda spokesperson said: “This equal value case is extremely complex so it is vital the issues are given the legal scrutiny they deserve. This latest judgement was to address factual disputes in the job roles at our stores and depots, and not to make any findings over whether the jobs are of equal value.

“Our hourly rates of pay in stores are the same for female and male colleagues, and this is equally true in our depots. Pay rates in stores differ from pay rates in distribution centres because the demands of the jobs in stores and the jobs in the distribution centre are very different; they operate in different market sectors and we pay the market rate in those sectors regardless of gender.”

It's been that way for decades.

Made in Dagenham was about male & female working on the same production line doing an equally skilled job and getting paid different.

This is about two completely different jobs in different buildings in different disciplines each post has equal pay for both genders but now the different posts require equal pay.

I look forward to Nurses demanding equal pay to doctors.

The judges viewed the work for Asda as being for the same "production line".

Edited to say: Won't work with doctors as the number of female doctors is equal to males at junior levels.

No, they must pay equal because they're deemed equivalent. lots of men work in supermarkets.
Not much skill involved in distribution centres, it's just carrying stuff. As is a lot of the work in supermarkets - stacking shelves tends to be more male-dominated than checkout duty.

Men refusing to show off and then use their people skills?

I've worked in both environments and the judge hasn't a clue. Sitting at a till scanning/weighing products and having a polite chat with the customers was far easier and less dangerous than manhandling boxes and pallets in a warehouse. That's without considering the FLT/reach truck qualifications required for those workers, which add value. Clueless, unless the judge wants to drop down to the salary of the court clerk because they're all part of the same production line? Didn't think so.
