I've worked in several European countries and been lucky to travel a lot in most parts of the world and for all of its faults, IMHO the UK is a decent country to live in (weather aside.)
Of all the countries I've visited, only three have really been on my radar to move to. Loved NZ, it almost felt more English than England but it was 15 years behind. I wasn't a big fan of Australia, the number of shall we say, very uncouth people, I met was off putting, never mind some worrying levels of racism.
I'm debating becoming a part time teleworker in 7-8 years and if so, my preferred destination is Asia and probably Thailand. I would live out there for 3-6 months a year.
After the government's handling of covid, IR35 changes in April and Brexit, the penny has finally dropped and I'm looking at an exit strategy.
I may continue to work in the UK market but living in the UK is becoming extremely untenable.
My options right now:
- Switzerland: Thanks to brexit we can't go there right now for a contract but I'm hoping this changes in the next few months as there is demand for highly qualified professionals in my area of work.
- Dubai: Set myself up there, pay corp tax here and zero income tax in Dubai. Sure I'll have to pay for medical insurance and other services but with NHS waiting lists does it even matter?
If only we had the war damage and the government financial backing geared towards "full employment" being the golden ticket and not "maximising GDP" . GDP means sod all to most of us, even us here, the 5% . We've absolutely nothing to gain from GDP increases.
