Boris Johnson could abandon use of prime ministerial Jaguar for German-made car

"The Prime Minister could be forced to opt for a BMW or Mercedes after more than 30 years of Downing Street Jaguars

Boris Johnson could break with tradition and choose a German-made ministerial car to attend official events, after the end of production of the current iconic Jaguar XJ.

The Prime Minister is protected by several Jaguar XJ Sentinels with a range of security features including bulletproof windows and bodywork.

But the fleet has been depleted by breakdowns and crashes since they were purchased by David Cameron’s administration in 2010, leaving Mr Johnson with few vehicles left to attend events.

The Telegraph understands the Metropolitan Police, who are responsible for the cars, must replace the suite of Prime Ministerial vehicles soon but are unable to replace them with a like-for-like XJ.

Jaguar has stopped production of the current model, after demand fell during the coronavirus pandemic. It will launch a new version of the car next year."

Thank God for Tory Industrial Policy

Alternatively he might have just been recommended to get higher grade of armouring in his car...

    Yep -

"Armoured BMWs, many of which protect their occupants from automatic machine gun fire, are popular with businesspeople in Russia and the Middle East.

A move to a German car would see the first non-British Prime Ministerial car ever, and the first non-Jaguar since Margaret Thatcher ordered her cars from Daimler - a Jaguar brand - in the 1980s.

A Jaguar spokeswoman confirmed the XJ, the company’s top-end saloon offering, is currently out of production and not available for order. The Telegraph understands the specialist armouring and security features of the Prime Minister’s current cars were fitted by a third party company, not by Jaguar itself."

    Can't beat factory made armouring...

He should replace his Jaguar with a Tata Motors Limited car. Something like an F-Pace would complete nicely with with Rishi's family on home ground.

But, I am sure Boris will buy British. I look forward to the official Morgan Aero 8s shuttling forwards & backwards between Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament. Ministerial 620Rs would be also be a sensible option.

Are these still British? Boris might struggle to get all the kids in though...

His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...

What's the problem with an armoured Range Rover V8?

The royalty and diplomatic protection squad (not sure of they are actually named that these days) already have a fleet of armoured BMW's (5 and 7 series) so surely they can just bung him in one of these?

This is more suited to BoJo's ego.

Correct answer is that it breaks down too much...
