The news that doctors are drawing up their own rationing – or “triage” – protocols for possible use in the event that the NHS becomes overwhelmed is frightening, but welcome.
There could be only one thing worse than NHS critical care capacity being overrun in the coming weeks and that is if it happens in a chaotic fashion.
The thousands of doctors and nurses fighting to keep the nation’s critical care units afloat must have the protocols necessary to allocate finite resources fairly and consistently should they find themselves unable to treat everyone."
