    “ The battle for the Union will intensify with a landmark court case next month to decide whether the Scottish parliament has the power to stage a second independence referendum against the wishes of Boris Johnson.

    As Nicola Sturgeon, the SNP first minister, prepares to launch her campaign for Holyrood elections in May, the legal arguments in the court of session could prove even more important, threatening her job and that of the prime minister.

    Support for Scottish secession has climbed since the start of the pandemic, reaching 58% of those who expressed a preference in the most recent ComRes poll, with opposition at 42%. But Johnson is refusing to grant a second referendum, citing Sturgeon’s claim that the 2014 vote was a “once in a generation” decision.
