    New national lockdown imminent

"Covid: Boris Johnson 'hoping to avoid' national lockdown"

PM Boris Johnson says he is "hoping to avoid" another national lockdown in England but admits Covid cases have increased "very much" in recent weeks.

It comes after a tough new six-week lockdown was announced in Northern Ireland from 26 December.

Wales will also begin a lockdown on 28 December, while the Scottish government has said "nothing" can be ruled out ahead of a review on Tuesday.

Health bosses have warned the NHS is already under significant pressure.

The president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, Dr Katherine Henderson, said England and Scotland needed to do "whatever it takes" to get a grip of the virus, even if that meant "full lockdown".

Meanwhile, the R number - which represents how many people each infected person passes the virus onto - has risen above 1 in the UK.

The latest figure, calculated by the government's scientific advisers, is estimated to be between 1.1 and 1.2, up from between 0.9 and 1 last week.

The UK recorded a further 28,507 cases on Friday, along with 489 deaths within 28 days of a positive test. "

Scottish ministers meeting in Tuesday. Westminster ministers meeting today.

Oh and the Swedish have been told to wear face masks in public transport after months of their public health doctor saying they don't work.

They can only play the cards they have. Ineffective controls as they aren't China.

How is the virus getting on in the country of origin, don't hear much about it running rampant over there? All under control after they took the extreme path of welding residents indoors, none of this namby pamby wear a mask when walking around the pub/restaurant but it's safe to take it off when sat down.

At the end of all this the countries with the stricter control of the population will have a better economy and therefore a stronger world position. Funny how China looks to be winning that race. How marvelously coincidental for them.
Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down. Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

I don't think anyone is trying to argue that a free and democratic society is more efficient then a totalitarian regime (when it wants to be efficient) especially at handling something like this.

In a free society you need to balance costs to society against restrictions on personal freedom. I personally think we got that balance wrong here but there were always going to be more deaths here then china even if we got the balance right.

There's to be some news announcement at 4 pm. If that's like the last time we'll be still waiting for it to start at 6 pm and there's a risk it'll clash with the Strictly final

I suspect the BBC have been very clear that Strictly has to start at 6 so Boris will be cut off at 5:59 regardless of when he starts talking.

Good luck now everyone in London is under house arrest..
