Indeed, in the "good old days", one of my sisters wanted to take up an apprenticeship as a hairdresser. In order to do so, it was normal in those for the parents to pay a lump sum to the employer who in return would carry out training and use the money to pay a small weekly wage to the apprentice. Fortunately, a customer who was a philanthropist paid for her.
