You are aware that aircraft take off INTO the wind, yes? So building more runways will not remove the need to turn the aircraft towards a westerly direction if wind conditions mean they had to take off towards the east.

If a bit of change in direction after take off bothers you, I don't think you'd enjoy Leeds-Bradford on a windy day.

Reykjavik is always fun too .... on very windy days (and there are lots in Iceland) planes come in sideways and only straighten up at the last second.

The original airport had six runways, in a star of David configuration. You can still see bits of it left over in the taxiways. The two now in use were selected due to the predominant wind direction. Although, on days when there's a strong crosswind from the southwest, I wonder if they should have kept them...

The original airport had six runways, in a star of David configuration. You can still see bits of it left over in the taxiways. The two now in use were selected due to the predominant wind direction. Although, on days when there's a strong crosswind from the southwest, I wonder if they should have kept them...

Star of David would work because then you always have 2 runways running parallel. With the 2 surviving runways, building a third in a different direction would be slightly bonkers (and ironically reduce capacity).

I'm very happy about this. There are already too many planes going overhead around where I live. The residents of Richmond/Twickenham were polled on the 3rd runway, we voted no to it - then they ignored us and went ahead anyway.
