The Bloomberg article keeps talking about the 'Great recession', what great recession? Has anyone here known this? I don't. I don't recall searching for pennies to collect money for the rent, raiding the bins for food. If you compared the 'Great recession' of the 1930's with 2007 (as what they are calling it), there's no comparison at all. 2007 was banking crisis. I do hate when the terminology is used incorrectly by the media.

The only way of getting more equality is a depression.

UK is hampered by Norman conquest. That structure is still basically the same today.

100% death duties would help. Abolishion of trusts and foreign ownership of UK assets would also help.

Though nothing will change. I heard of a Dutchman who was a guest at Eaton Hall(Duke of Westminster) who was riding away from the house for a long time. He asked his host if he was still on the Duke's land and was told he was. He remarked "its a miracle the British are all ot communists".

I think there was a recent survey indicating that the British are very tolerant of inequality and will put up with it.

I wish we were more like the French.

Not sure the figure of less than 1% is entirely accurate. It's based on a flawed assumption that the corporations aren't owned by anybody.
The corporations are likely owned, in the main, by pension companies.

Korbyn will fix that though as he wants to tax the wealthy, so once they realise they can't tax the really wealthy they'll come for your pensions.

Not really. Before the Conquest 1/3rd of the land was beneficially owned by the King, 1/3rd by the Church, and the remaining 1/3rd by a dozen or so powerful Earls, each of whom owned two or three counties and claimed absolute ownership of their lands.

After the conquest, King William owned 100% of the land, as the Crown in Parliament does to this day. Of this he granted about 1/4 to the church, and another 1/4 to several hundred tenants in chief who possessed the land in fee (freehold) and themselves sublet it to thousands more people, and the King kept 1/2 in beneficial ownership including forest lands (which covered several counties).

So in a way the Norman conquest made land tenure more egalitarian not less!

I think he'll come for a lot of things that only "the wealthy" have and the majority of folks won't bat an eye because everyone knows the rich* need to be taxed more.

Given the average UK wage is £30k I would imagine pretty much everyone on here is going to be classed as 'wealthy'
