A mini thread on the fire protocol, plus an interesting observation that the oaks for the beams and steeple are already grown in preparation for just such an event:

The most interesting concept in the thread on the protocol was the planning for the "Long Now." The idea that you plan to preserve what you have built well beyond the lifetime of the builders. That you are building something now that will still be standing in hundreds of years time.

The last time this happened, during the French Revolution, after they rebuilt it they planted new Oak trees in Versailles to replace those cut for the roof timbers, specifically to make sure they would be available if it happened again.

That is long term planning, and something we could do with more of today.
