Listen, son, have you ever been in a restaurant with a nice lady and ordered a desert before heading home?
If so, what did you get - cherries, banana and fruits like that, or a tomato?

A tomtato is a fruit. Might not be a desert kind of fruit, but it's a fruit none the less. If I'm in a restauraunt with a nice lady, my wife will probably be asking some tough questions later in which case the genus to which the tomato belongs will be irrelevent. But it would still be a fruit.Hang on - there is actually a place called Cheddar?? - cailin maith

Authoratative source of definition please?Originally posted by AtWTomato is a veg, just like cucumber and others.
Fruits are cherries, bananas, peaches, apricots etc.
("I know it is so" doesn't work after age 10).
Scientific definition: "The ripened, fully developed ovary of a flower containing more than 1 seed".
Everyday mnemonic: a tomato is like Liberace, not a vegetable but a fruit.Comment

"The U.S. Supreme Court settled this controversy in 1893, declaring that the tomato is a vegetable, using the popular definition which classifies vegetable by use, that they are generally served with dinner and not dessert. The case is known as Nix v. Hedden (149 U.S. 304)."Originally posted by expatAuthoratative source of definition please?
