I was reading an analyst on The Guardian website when I posted the thread. Apparently in Wales people have turned out in some areas to vote to kick out local councillors due to 3 weekly bin collections.

So it's not all about keeping the current lot in the council.

Indeed though it seems this only happens when something particularly bad happens. In our area, it's red through and through and they're awful... so entrenched and complacent. There's been a lot of controversy over teaching assistant pay reclassification in Country Durham, which Corbyn personally vowed to sort out but the local council filibustered attempts to even get it up for debate from the LibDems. So it'll be interesting to see what happens since clearly teachers and TAs are traditionally Labour especially in the north.

They have lost control of Glasgow City Council which they have held since 1980.

Not only that but, if these elections are indicative of the GE, they suggest that any progressive alliance is dead in the water. The Lib Dems also performed poorly, given the context and their relatively strong ground game. There's no indication that they're about to retake a lot of seats in the SW, notwithstanding a couple of upsets (e.g. Somerset). Subject to events, the GE heralds a massive Tory landslide with no real opposition from the Lib Dems or Labour, and probably diminished opposition from the SNP too. However, I don't expect that HMG policy will tack right at all. May has confused a lot of the electorate on the right, and they're about to find out that she's really Ed Millipede in drag (pursuing a policy agenda that's largely driven by Nick Timothy)

It really demonstrates just how bad things are that now the only hope for the country is that Theresa May is really Ed Milliband in drag.

Update on local elections is that UKIP have lost every seat they have had so far.

UKIP were the shock troops of Brexit and their job is done. Now the Tory party is free to dismantle workers' rights and conditions to create a Utopia for the super-rich. Unless of course Jacob Rees Mogg and his nanny are correct in their narrative that Brexit is a great blow against the Establishment.

Scotland is surely SNP catching up post-GE but yes, Labour are being demolished. It seems quite remarkable but I don't follow local politics well enough to be sure?
