Indeed its time to look through these imposed contracts.

If they can ignore the legality of a situation to collect tax you must be able to do it to avoid abuse.

It was published in the Guardian and I posted it on the future of contracting thread.

If you want people to pay "the right amount of tax" you need to penalise the companies first.

Unfortunately as the government, both central and local, likes all these grey types of workers they can't throw stones.

The language in the document is formal, awkward and unfamiliar.

Media and HMRC have to understand that it's HMRC rules that we're all following, not something imposed by corps. TBH the laws used to be about fairness (it's madness to pay tax 3 or more times on the same sum, no one thinks that fair not even HMRC ) now it's about revenue generation. They've lost the battle with the big players so now are chasing softer targets.

I think this is a good point. You'd think that journos would get it, aren't they all 'independent contractors' despite appearing on the 9 o'clock news every day for years and years. So long as they knock out the odd book or write an article, they seem to be home free.
