It's time to start building large scale apartment estates, new suburbs of the cities, with apartments only 5 or 6 floors high and lots and lots of them, in the same new suburbs build the new schools and doctor's surgeries and related required infrastructure

anyone who thinks the ten houses going up in the next village is going to fix the problem is just dreaming

The graph appears to spike at the same time house prices increased dramatically.

Supply and demand. BTL only seem to be filling in the gap when council houses were not longer meeting the demand. Perhaps they are the result rather than the cause.

Cobblers. The graph spikes at the point that people realised that there was going to be little point in a pension for their old aged so not unreasonably switched to property. This has inadvertently helped the property bubble to be perpetuated.

There is a general shortage of housing stock - whether to buy or to let. This is caused by
1. More households (or wannabe households)
Causes: migration and more single people (due to divorce or coupling up later) wanting a home of their own
2. Not enough stock
Causes: land banking, nimbyism, government inaction, councils not building, lack of investment

Solutions.
1. Reduce migration
2. Build more homes

Since they're already here, reducing migration won't help. Ergo - BUILD MORE HOMES.

It's really not difficult. But there's no political will. Building more homes, means upsetting nimbys and possible falling house prices.

The solution is to forcefully move all of government and favourably encourage business to move out of London and the SE and relocate to other parts of the UK.

There is cheaper housing stock and more untapped infrastructure in places like Lincolnshire than in the South East.

Expel all Bremain supporting Enemies of the People for a pure Folk, and this will also address the housing crisis.

Yep it spikes in 2008/9 when banks started really flogging BTL mortgages as a 4% return on property looked better than 0.5% from a bank account.

A great idea with only two major flaws.

1. It's the government who has to decide to do this, and implement it.

Whereabouts in the UK do you live?

A great idea with only two major flaws.

1. It's the government who has to decide to do this, and implement it.
2. See point 1.

(I know it looks like only 1 flaw, but it's such a big one I thought it worth mentioning twice).

And to a large extent they've already done it.

That's why in the NE and Scotland there's a disproportionate number of government jobs compared to private sector ones.
