I keep the larger sums in a different account which I can transfer from in a matter of seconds... and my current account provider text me if I go overdrawn and give me until the end of the day as a grace period before charging any fees (maybe that's a rule in the UK these days?)

Got the impression when in Zurich a couple of month ago the people found it expensive themselves. Hear plenty of stories of folks crossing into the German border to shop in Aldi or wherever.
It's great from a tax perspective.
Made the mistake of leaving my DE mobile on roaming. Data was €1 for 50KB
