And this is the rub. Views are massively tainted by personal experience. My Mum made it to grammar school - hated it - and therefore I went to a comperhensive. Conversely, I found that the comp. (in an expensive area as noted by one of your previous posts) was a totally floored idea. There was streaming too, but the kids from the rougher end of the life's spectrum still ended up causing a disproportionate degree of disruption. I'm not saying some kids didn't do well, but in my eyes it wasn't performing in the way it was intended.

Gipsies in the case of the comp where I thankfully only spent a short time before being bundled off to scrum down with a more elevated stratum of society at Millfield.

They were all in the bottom sstream (affectionately known as the "chicken feeders") but they didn't half cause havoc which impacted on everybody else in the school.

I remember one lad in third year running round the playground. What looked like a stick fell out his back pocket. The head of third year marched over, picked up the 'stick' and proceeded to extend it. Shouting the boy's name he then said "What do you think this is?" The reply came as nonchalant as you like "It's a cosh sir."

Within 24 months of my year turning 16 one lad was inside for armed robbery, another was doing life for murder. This was in comp. in a smarter part of South London. Heaven knows what the rougher parts turn out.

That's why I suggested the fast stream, or academic classes, should be in different buildings to the rest, preferably at separate sites, and only come together for things like morning assembly or shared dining in the refectory.

I don't think anybody wanted any coming together as far as the gipsy kids were concerned.

            They were absolutely filthy.

(I should point out that these weren't Romany gipsies but the Oirish tinker variety).

That is the sort of bollox victims spout.

Everyone has a chance to go to school, learn, pass exams and get a job

For some it is more difficult for others - but that can be just as much for an average kid whose parents have spent all their money on a mortgage in a house in a nice area and they are under huge pressure to be 'middle class' as to a kid from a council estate whose parents appear not to care.

What's your excuse for your poor educational achievement, then?
