If they had been smart they could have said they felt they were assigned the "wrong" gender, then they would have got away with it

The Scots got the idea from the Irish, but the reasons were entirely different.
The Irish wore them because there weren't trousers big enough to keep everything in.
The Scots wore them for the sporran, keep your money in there and very few other men will try to grab it from you.
