Elections for what? democracy will become dissolved and power controlled in soviet Union style - dominated by the Russians (like the EU) with "token" national governments supposedly having a say in how things are run but who are effectively in the pockets of the russians/EULet us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyone -

Do you have evidence for that?Originally posted by DodgyAgent View PostElections for what? democracy will become dissolved and power controlled in soviet Union style
I say it's impossible scenario because all member states get representation in EU Parliament which selects President - too many diverse countries to allow single dominating one.Comment

why don't we change the title of president to something that reflects the ultimate power it grants maybe something like Fuhrer would be good?Originally posted by DodgyAgent View PostElections for what? democracy will become dissolved and power controlled in soviet Union style - dominated by the Russians (like the EU) with "token" national governments supposedly having a say in how things are run but who are effectively in the pockets of the russians/EUComment

Why is someone from the smallest country in Europe the president? If he were put up in direct competition to other leaders from other countries what proportion of votes do you think he would get>Originally posted by AtW View Post"The post was established in 1958 and is elected by the European Parliament, on a proposal of the European Council for five-year terms. Once appointed, he or she, along with the Commission, is responsible to Parliament which can censure the President. The current President is Jean-Claude Juncker, who took office on 1 November 2014. He is a member of the European People's Party (EPP) and is the former Prime Minister of Luxembourg. Juncker is the twelfth President and his First Vice-President is Frans Timmermans."

Next elections due in 2019, that's your answer.
The President is correctly elected by the Parliament (which was elected by the people), good solution, EU needed stronger executive branch.Let us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyoneComment

Because (and that's elementary) if a German was chosen then UK and France would cry rivers of tears.Originally posted by DodgyAgent View PostWhy is someone from the smallest country in Europe the president?
It's a good, smart and safe choice to pick somebody from a "small" country.
Get elected as a MEP and put forward your own candidacy next time.Comment

You explain the constitution of the Soviet Union then. I think you will find it is the model on which the EU will become. transfer of powers to the EU (unelected). The national governments then have reduced power so begin to owe their positions to the patronage of the EU. Hey presto we have a Soviet Union.Originally posted by AtW View PostDo you have evidence for that?

So what. At least it is democratic that the people of the EU would get one man one vote.Originally posted by AtW View PostBecause (and that's elementary) if a German was chosen then UK and France would cry rivers of tears.

Unlike you I actually know what Soviet rule was - it was total central control from Moscow, more or less how it is now again in Russia - "rulers" of republics in Soviet Unions were APPOINTED from Moscow, that's not the same with EU and won't work even if they tried.Originally posted by DodgyAgent View PostYou explain the constitution of the Soviet Union then.Comment

The led must be able to remove the leader. It isn't adequate to have officials who elect, appoint or censure each other.Originally posted by AtW View Post"The post was established in 1958 and is elected by the European Parliament, on a proposal of the European Council for five-year terms. The led must be able to remove the leader. So what's the date of the next election where I can vote to remove the Commission and the President ?Comment
