At work the system sometimes blocks sites for various reasons, e.g. often just slightly rightish blogs are blocked as "extreme" although no worse than average CUK opinion. Can't believe they have a team here going through every site, including blogs, so where do they get the lists from?

Web filters are based on lists created by the software manufacturers. And yes, they do employ people to check and classify websites for their filter lists. They also take feed back from customers. Most of them update remotely every 24 hours to stay current.
Best one I've seen was at my last gig. A site selling Green Wellies was blocked as containing "Intimate Apparel". The Middle Aged female finance director was most put out about it

All I do know is that one of the "higher-ups" has asked me to clandestinely get hold of the surfing habits of "randomly selected" individuals at a few sites.
When I said I would "put all the names in a hat and draw 2", he said "er..that's not what I want...just start in the PM's office".
I asked if he wanted a complete folder dump of IE History, and he was a bit confused. I told him that IE, if not properly cleaned out, recording all surfing activity.
He said "well, not the whole folder....just anything that looks dodgy, really."
I asked "well, what do you mean by dodgy ? Repeat visits to Pigeon Fancier's Online ? Home Cooking with Fanny Craddock ? All Creatures Great and Small Outtakes with Cow's Bums and Rubber Gloves ?"
He said..."Anything political, like BNP or Conservative/Rightwing or other similar extremist views, that sort of stuff"
I rung an agent today. I have an interview Monday for a new job. I knew better to argue with him.
