At the end of the day as a contractor you need to go where the work is, I've never worked in my home city since I started contracting, it's been Midlands or London. A long commute or staying over is better than being involuntarily benched, I also have never cut a contract short, if I start something I will finish it (not extending a contract is fine but bailing halfway is not for me).

I have often thought this as missus works from home largely so can do the 3 school runs morning and afternoon, and the various bits in between

On the rare occasion I've had to do it, I'm exhausted by 4pm and dying to return to the office

WFH would be great without the kids

I don't think I approached it any different even when I was a permie.

It's not just about experience, it's about having a war chest that is easily accessible.

Currently it takes 60 - 90 seconds to reach the office.

That's about the same time as it takes AndyW's mum to get to work.

Yup, it worries me how many people jump into contracting without thinking this through.

I suppose you can take the risk but you end up having to take any old tulip your offered. Which kind of goes against one of the reasons I decided to go contracting.
