Depends on where you live. Not all the south is motorways and Tescos. There are still a few villages up hills.

Against my better judgement I am going to admit owning a Subaru Legacy.... All the points above I can verify. All garages I have taken Subaru's too have commented on how well made and reliable they are. I have had various Imprezas in the past too, same thing, reliable, tough and good to drive.

One point though, their Sat Nav / Stereo is awful, cheap, poor interface and clunky. Consider an aftermarket swap if that sort of thing bothers you.

Legacy is a great car and even looks good in the estate version, IMO.
Shame the replacement, the Levorg, doesn't look so good.
If Subaru hired some decent designers and left the underlying engineering bits as they are, they'd be a contender.

So after 150,000 miles the trusty Mondeo is going to be replaced now I'm not doing the slog up and down to Portsmouth / Southampton every week.

In the running are :

Jaguar XF 2.0d R-Sport
BMW 520d M Sport
Mercedes C200d Sport

Not buying brand new.

If you choose a BMW, avoid the ones with N47 engine, they are having problems in the distribution chain.

FWD cars limited to the amount of power they can get to wheels before they spin up - with turbo engines there is a lot torque, so any proper contractor motor should be RWD or AWD.

Oh most knowledgeable one, what is the power limit? Is it more or less than enough to get you to 60 in under 8 seconds?

Around 200 bhp last time I checked, depends more on torque than bhp, with current trend for turbo engines even in smaller cars torque is pretty high.
