    3. The stench of uncollected rubbish, 3 day weeks and power cuts as socialism "worked" its usual magic.
    4. School playgrounds being a bit brutal: black eyes, bleeding noses and bruises ignored by teachers and parents alike as being part of growing up
    5. Sharing your small bedroom with a sibling as houses, although cheap compared to now, were still expensive relative to salary - the 1.5/2 times salary max mortgage limit was strictly enforced.
    6. Tons of maths homework compared to kids now.

No wonder us oldies dominate the economy: we're well 'ard compared to selfish, selfie, me-me-me, poorly educated, our-only-skill-is-social-media, can't focus for more than 5 minutes, Gen Y cretins.
    Why are the two two's?

My memory tells me the Conservatives were in charge during the three-day week and power cuts though no doubt you are arguing it was due to the percieved socialist leanings of the NUM...

WRT to 2 number 1. we didn't have a bathroom, we washed in the sink after mum put 'mersion on. Colour? Stainless steel.

2 number 2. I got slippered twice for nowt! Well spitting (grozzing) on someones jumper but that were nowt, can't remember why I got the other.

    4. And the shame of being the last boy in short trousers at 11 in Form 5. That's a personal one and a bit issue for me since I was over 6' even at 10 and still being in shorts. Human rights infringed? Bollock to that? Abuse? Eh? I just got on with it till my mum sold a kidney so I could have some long kecks. Indeed, my parents couldn't afford any clothes for me until I was 9, when my Dad bought me a cap so I could look out the window...

    5. Luxury, we were so poor we all five of us, parents and kids, slept in the same bedroom, replete with pisspot under the bed. I can still hear the sound and smell of my dad pissing in it, and the dark yellow colour due to Magees Crown Ale....

    6. I used to have to do other peoples homework or get twatted, luckily it was piss-easy as I missed out on grammar school due to scurvy and ened up in the local 'Modern' where I was top at everything without breaking sweat. Suited me.

    Eeeeeh, but wi' were 'appy.....

My son doesn't know about these. Every set is an expensive build-once item that then has to be displayed and takes loads of space up. Very clever of the bastards at Lego.

Poor little SAS was bullied at school. Not only that but his parents and teachers didn't care.

I have always pictured SAS as a sad little loser taking out his frustration on the world as a internet Keyboard Warrior... now I know it to be true it is bitter sweet as one of the causes was being bullied as a child.

The saddest part is that SAS and Suity are so similar - the real difference being Suity despite still being a victim of bullying maintains an unquenchable optimism where as SAS is 100% sad through and through.
Some might contend that the saddest part was when your mouse hovered over "Reply With Quote" and your judgement failed you. But hey, we've all done it.

Whoever designed our school deemed it appropriate to build a water feature that ran the length of it. We could study nature.

This became the perfect place to refill our jif lemons (used for squirting other kids) though the risks associated with crouching next to the water feature weren't to be underestimated. Our skills at salesmanship were honed by trying to persuade the little kids in winter that the thin layer of ice on the surface of the water feature would "definitely take your weight".

90% of kids at my school had one of those blue parkas with the furry hoods and orange lining. They were warm but not waterproof. By the time we'd walked a mile to school in the rain (yeah, try it, kids) these parkas weighed half a hundredweight.

Biggest bully in my formative years was the teacher. Psychological intimidation so much more effective when supported by physical violence. She truly was evil. Miss Knabe, and don't dare pronounce it wrong!

I remember a few of those as an early-80s kid. I quite like the really-cold-bedroom thing though; maybe a case of rose-tinted-spectacles.
