I think people take time to get to know each other down south as the pace of life is more intense.
But they're just as good friends once that process happens.
Better than the superficial, faux friendliness one experiences oop North.
    Hard Brexit now!

Bitter experience of trying to make friends while having a chip on your shoulder?

Not really, just can't stand strangers being nosy.

Not used to people generally giving a toss? You've been conditioned by Londoners.

If you act like a tosser, people aren't polite or friendly to you anywhere. When people complain about how unfriendly an area is, that probably says more about them.

In London they expect you to act like a tosser and respond accordingly until you demonstrate otherwise, perhaps.

As an observation southerners (those within 30 mins of London) are more suspicious of strangers. They often come across initially as rude or over familiar, but usually this is a nervousness. If you can get past the initial temptation to punch them in the face, most turn out to be fairly human.

Southerners can be more socially awkward/inappropriate initially, hence the rep for being more unfriendly
